Los Angeles: 40 Artists - Getty Museum - Timothy Yarger Fine Art - Pacific Standard Time
In collaboration with our exhibition LOS ANGELES: 40 ARTISTS, we are pleased to announce the publication of Jim McHugh’s photographic portraits, “Studio Visits-Volume I.” As part of a larger body of McHugh’s work exceeding 100 images, we begin with a selection of artists whose distinctive talents define the birth of contemporary art in Los Angeles.
Currently, the Getty Museum’s initiative “Pacific Standard Time, Los Angeles Art 1945-1980” is an undertaking of unprecedented scale, incorporating more than 60 cultural institutions across Southern California, which have come together to tell a story of the birth of the LA art scene.
As this exhibition features the brilliant work of numerous remarkable artists, it was our vision to compliment the dialogue of the historic contribution to Contemporary Art through photographer Jim McHugh’s portraits. These very personal images capture an essence of each artist, an insight, a moment in time. Portraitist McHugh’s visual sensitivity, engaging personality, and enduring friendships with these artists inform this body of work.
Timothy Yarger Fine Art is honored to be an official participating gallery with the Getty’s historic undertaking. We wish to express our gratitude to Jim McHugh for his passionate commitment to photographing these artists. We would like to thank art historian Kristine McKenna for her thorough knowledge of Los Angeles Artists and insightful essay. We are equally pleased the former Museum of Photography Director Colin Westerbeck has assisted us with his thoughtful perspectives and expertise in Photography. We hope that you will enjoy these photographs, which are a unique historic chronicle of those artists who created the art of Pacific Standard Time.
